GWENT ELECTRONIC MATERIALS (GEM LTD.)
GEM Ltd. is a company founded in 1988 with the object of manufacturing materials for the electronics and associated industries. Products are manufactured directly for individual customers and are tailored to suit specific processes. Since it’s founding GEM Ltd. has grown to become a major supplier of paste and ink to industry. The current capability of the production facility is in the region of 100,000 to 200,000 Kg of paste per year. All pastes can be made in their own designed, latest fully computer controlled dispersion equipment. This is coupled with an extensive range of testing and analysis equipment to ensure that their products meet the highest standards.
GEM Ltd. also undertakes contract research for companies who wish to look at areas of new technology and do not have the in-house capability or expertise. Their research facility is also of sufficient size to ensure that a continuous development of customer products can be carried out in parallel with customer research and European grant aided research in conjunction with other consortium members.
GEM Ltd., is fully accredited to ISO 9001 2000, TS 16949:2002 (Automotive Industry) and ISO 13485 (Medical Industry) specification. This enables customers to take both the products and research results with the confidence that all processes, developments and raw materials specifications are carried out to an agreed international standard along with full trace ability. The product ranges that GEM Ltd. cover includes conductor pastes that may contain precious metal or non-precious metal, for all forms of substrates for passive or active components.
Robin Pittson is the Technical Director and co-owner of GEM. He is a graduate Chemist with Technical and Commercial Managerial experience in the Electronics and Polymer Industry prior to co-founding Gwent Electronic Materials. Robin has published technical papers on such topics as, Hybrid Resistor Systems, Polymer Thick Film Applications, Metallo-Organic Materials for Electronic Applications, Development of Screen Printed Amperometric Sensors, among others.
Robin has spent over 35 years in the advanced materials area developing formulations for electronic and biosensor applications. Whilst working for Engelhard Industries and Gwent Electronic Materials he has successfully directed a number of electrochemical material projects. Materials developed within these projects are now used by Europe’s leading suppliers of glucose biosensors.
During this period he has gained a thorough understanding of multi-disciplinary projects from both the technical and project management standpoints.
Robin co-founded Gwent Electronic materials in1988, and has successfully developed this as an advanced materials company. In 2001 he was instrumental in the acquisition of Applied Enzyme Technology into the Gwent group of companies and now sits on the board of all the companies in the group.
Laura Statton joined Gwent Electronic Materials in 2004, having graduated from The University of Manchester with an MEng in Materials Science.
For 11 years, she has worked as a Development Chemist; her skills and experience are in ink formulation for screen-printable electronics and medical devices.
Laura has worked on a number of Innovate UK projects developing novel materials. Currently, she is working on materials for high temperature applications and recyclable plastic electronics.
